NEW ORLEANS — Housing and office space for budding entrepreneurs is on its way to the Warehouse District in a $19-million project involving the Idea Village, a New Orleans nonprofit that supports entrepreneurs.
Construction will begin within 60 days on the live-and-work loft apartment development at 400 St. Joseph Street near Constance Street, said developer Jay Trevor of J& T Development, who is pairing with Idea Village on the project, the St. Joe Lofts.
Idea Village, which helps people start and run small businesses, will run an entrepreneurship center on the building’s ground floor.
“It’s an innovative plan that will give entrepreneurs who are starting out an affordable place to live and work with others who can help them get their (businesses) off the ground,” said Trevor.
The development will include 15 market-rate units and 45 affordable units available to people earning 60 percent of the area median income, or under $35,000 a year, Trevor said.
Construction is expected to be complete March 2009.
