NEW ORLEANS — In what city officials call a major move forward in the city’s recovery, the New Orleans Police Department’s headquarters at 715 S. Broad St. will reopen today after undergoing repairs of Hurricane Katrina damage.
Mayor C. Ray Nagin and NOPD Superintendent Warren Riley are scheduled to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m.
The event is open to the public.
“After more than two years in trailers and other temporary facilities, our police officers are now able to come home to police headquarters,” Nagin said. “This is an important day and is another example that 2008 will be the tipping point in our recovery. This also will allow our police to better fight crime and will ensure that they have the resources they need to do their jobs.”
The city has invested about $6.3 million to repair and enhance the facility. But total costs are expected to hit $7.25 million. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has committed $3.5 million, meaning the city will not be reimbursed for the remaining $3.75 million.
