Lafitte Corridor Master Plan Complete

NEW ORLEANS —Friends of Lafitte Corridor have released the Lafitte Greenway Master Plan, which calls for transforming the area into a 3-mile trail and public space that will link Armstrong Park to City Park and connect neighborhoods from Treme to Lakeview.
The trail would begin at Basin Street near Armstrong Park and run toward Lake Pontchartrain to Canal Boulevard near Delgado Community College.
FOLC said revitalization of the corridor into a greenway surrounded by a mixed-use district with housing and businesses will jump-start the recovery process in the area.
The Lafitte Corridor is one of the 17 recovery areas of the city’s Office of Recovery and Development Administration.
FOLC said the Lafitte Greenway will encourage economic revitalization; create transportation alternatives, such as walking, biking and connections to transit; improve public health; and promote cultural tourism by connecting to neighborhood attractions.
Baton Rouge-based Brown and Danos Land Design Inc. completed the master plan, which was funded by Bikes Belong, a national coalition of bicycle advocacy organizations, through a grant administered by The Urban Conservancy.
The Louisiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects gave the master plan a Merit Award.
