Board Member, Treasurer
While in Los Angeles, David Zalkind missed the shout out of “Where Y’at” and Mr. Okra touting his mangos. “I am inspired by the extraordinary mission of the Urban Conservancy,” says Zalkind. “UC is one of the most prominent stewards of the distinctive essence of New Orleans.” Zalkind remained attached to New Orleans by leading the Los Angeles Tulane Alumni Club as president and making sure only Louisiana crawfish was trucked to the annual May boils.
A principal of DMZ Mediation Services in Los Angeles, Zalkind mediated real estate property disputes on behalf of the Los Angeles Superior Court and the State of California Appellate Court. In addition, he facilitated creative solutions to multi-party land use disputes protecting the environment while enabling important public and private uses.
As one of the visionary founders and initial Board Member of the New Orleans Film Festival, Zalkind is proud seeing it prosper now in its 24th year. As the principal of City Porch Realty today, Zalkind says, “Air conditioning and television initially killed the idea of sitting on the porch and chatting with your neighbors. Suburban enclosed garages tore down the porch. Today’s generation, though, yearns for a sense of community – local is good.”
